I use Audacity for audio editing, a popular freeware, and yes you can use Import feature in it for extracting audio from videos, and then encode it into a wide range of formats.

Lol, yes it is.
I used it long time ago, but it is complicated as compared to Switch.
Audacity is one of the best freeware softs.
