Surrounded in the far east.. if you aren't aware then India's timezone is inaccurate to be used for the whole of India.. Because it is so vast and stretches from GMT +5 that Pakistan follows (where Mumbai is) upto GMT +6 that Bangladesh follows. The sun rises 2 hrs earlier in the East than Gujarat in the West. That's why we use the longitude that is at the center.

Wikipedia wrote:The country's east–west distance of more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi) covers over 28 degrees of longitude, resulting in the sun rising and setting almost two hours earlier on India's eastern border than in the Rann of Kutch in the far west. Inhabitants of the north–eastern states have to advance their clocks with the early sunrise and avoid the extra consumption of energy after daylight hours.

Back during the British era, we did have 3 timezones, one for Kolkata, one for Mumbai, and one in Madras that railways used. But too many timezones are confusing atleast for most of the illiterate population of India (unlike USA where you have 5 timezones), so we only adopted one.

See? Almost all the advanced countries follow Daylight Savings Time! I reckon it's time India gets one too!
