That extra hour is daylight, natural sunlight, which in turn we consume the extra hour in the evening as the Sun sets early so 1 extra hour of electricity. That is why countries that follow DST forward their clocks an hour ahead in Summer, to synchronize with the Sun or the daylight, so that we wake up early, sleep early, and less electricity is consumed, and extra daylight for the evenings (when there is more activity compared to early mornings).
Just like in India, because of the vast area and only 1 timezone, the sun rises as early as 4am in Assam and other Eastern states, whereas as late as 6 or 6.30 in Mumbai. Those extra 2 hours are wasted in the Eastern states because they follow the standard IST time to start work. In this manner, daylight is wasted and there is need of either DST or multiple timezones.

The half clocks of my house are on new time and half on old time.
